Eco Factor: Retractable-blade wind turbine generates solar energy as well.
Honolulu-based Natural Power Concepts has designed a mobile, retractable-blade wind turbine that generates both wind and solar energy. Featuring seven instead of three blades, the wind turbine catches low-wind speeds more effectively. The energy generated by the system is stored in a battery bank.
The turbine is considered safer than utility-scale turbines as when wind speed exceeds certain levels, the blades are pushed back to a closed position. The company has also secured licensing agreement with Oshkosh Defense, which will develop a full-scale model in the coming months.
